The cashew harvest in West Africa is currently in full swing. A Cologne-based social enterprise ensures local processing and fair trade.     

Less added value, more carbon emissions: A large part of the cashew harvest in Togo is transported directly to India or Vietnam for further processing. From there, the cashews are sent back to Europe, covering a distance of more than 32,000 kilometres – with corresponding emissions.

Robert Münch, Felix Löhr and Charles Mugarura take a different route: the team of togocashews GmbH delivers directly to Europe after the cashews have been dried, cracked, peeled, packed and sorted on the spot.

In this way, the Cologne-based social enterprise maximises value creation in africa – and thus creates scope for fair purchase prices and wages. “The model saves emissions, is good for the local economy and creates many secure jobs,” says the website.

In addition, the togocashews team advises farmers on regenerative agriculture with organic cultivation. For this purpose, Robert Münch and Felix Löhr will travel to Togo again in March – also with the support of Martin Schoeller and the Africa First Network. There they want to develop innovative solutions for current challenges, first and foremost the drought.

Die Cashew-Ernte in Westafrika läuft derzeit auf Hochtouren. Ein Kölner Sozialunternehmen setzt auf Verarbeitung vor Ort.      

Weniger Wertschöpfung, mehr CO2-Emissionen: Ein Großteil der Cashew-Ernte in Togo wird direkt zum Schälen nach Indien oder Vietnam transportiert. Von dort aus geht’s dann zurück nach Europa, womit die Cashews mehr als 32.000 Kilometer zurücklegen – mit entsprechendem Kohlendioxid-Ausstoß.

Einen anderen Weg beschreiten Robert Münch, Felix Löhr und Charles Mugarura: Das Team der togocashews GmbH liefert Cashews direkt nach Europa, nachdem sie vor Ort getrocknet, geknackt, geschält, verpackt und sortiert wurden.

Damit maximiert das Kölner Sozialunternehmen die Wertschöpfung vor Ort – und schafft somit Spielräume für faire Einkaufspreise und Löhne. „Das Modell spart Emissionen, ist gut für die lokale Wirtschaft und schafft viele sichere Arbeitsplätze“, heißt es auf der Webseite.

Zudem berät das togocashews-Team Landwirte beim Bepflanzen ihrer Felder, um eine regenerative Landwirtschaft mit Bio Anbau zu etablieren. Dafür reisen Robert Münch und Felix Löh im März wieder nach Togo – auch mit Unterstützung von Martin Schoeller und dem Africa First Network.
