September 4 – 6: Africa Climate Summit 2023 (Nairobi)
The Summit convened by the African Union and the government of Kenya will focus on delivering innovative green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa.
Besides the UN, Germany and Denmark are among the supporters of the event. Speakers will include Kenyan President William Ruto and Azali Assoumani of the African Union (AU).
“It is crucial to shift the narrative away from a division between the Global North and the Global South in addressing the climate crisis”, the organisers write. “Collaboration and collective action are vital for all nations to combat climate change effectively. Africa is ready to contribute to global decarbonization efforts.”
This would require a joint effort: “While governments and multilateral institutions play a central role, the private sector, civil society, philanthropic institutions, and local communities all have vital contributions to make. The private sector’s investment is crucial in mobilizing the necessary capital, while philanthropies can de-risk projects and drive innovation.
